Giving thanks...

In the United States  Thanksgiving will be celebrated this week.  I am wondering how many people realize that giving thanks for the harvest occurred before the Pilgrims and was celebrated by Native Americans as well as by Spaniards in the New World? As a child growing up in Florida, we were taught this early on.

It is a holiday I have mixed emotions about.  There are so many starving people in the world and the thought of stuffing myself really turns me off.  On the other hand, it is a family tradition that family loves to celebrate.

If you can, consider donating to a food bank or shelter.  This year the need is great than ever. And, please, find it in your heart to be kinder and less volatile towards those in need.  I recently heard some hate speech that sickened me.  (Not everyone has boots straps that they can pull themselves up with.)  Count yourself fortunate and wish good fortune to others. Find some empathy and kindness in your heart if you possibly can...however you celebrate the day.

Best wishes for a happy holiday weekend.  I am thankful every day...I hope you are, too!

As always,

enjoy the day.

Helen, thank you for your good words. I am thankful to know you, and many other caring souls, thanks to the internet.

I will indeed be donating to our local food pantry; an excellent idea.

Blessings to you.

When I was a teacher, it was so much fun to have the big Thanksgiving Feast with the children. WE would ask each child what they were Thankful for. They would dress up like Pilgrims and Indians and happily try foods they might never try at home. Now it's a nice opportunity to enjoy the company of another couple whose children are far from home. And I never forget the many many things I am thankful for.

Oh Helen, this is so true. We are blessed beyond all measure. This year David and I decided to forgo all the Thanksgiving traditions at our house and we served meals at "Mission Hope" in Winona. It was very blessed. Wishing you and your family many blessing.

Hi Helen, it sounds like you had a nice Thanksgiving weekend. I enjoyed your post about Mystic Seaport. Those carvings are beautiful.

I made the connection this year towards why I've always had ambivalent feelings towards this holiday, and it is much for the same reasons. I try to donate to the food banks here, all year round, but there is so much need. I think we can all do so much more.
