A little doll humor sent to me over the years...

Of all the people I know, I am the least likely to collect dolls. In fact, I didn't collect dolls until about ten years ago. I paint abstract art (which I don't show on line.) My heroes are Pollack, Frankenthaler, Diebenkorn and others of that era. I dress in black and collect books and ephemera on Proust, Anais Nin, Colette and Frida Kahlo and other authors. I am political news junkie. I have had many jobs in the arts: I wrote rock and restaurant reviews, worked in galleries, have shown work locally in galleries, and I am happier in NYC than I am in my own back yard here in New England.

The only dolls I had contact with after age twelve were my daughter's dolls as they grew up. I made them dolls and plush animals over the years and doll clothes and quilts but never really wanted dolls myself. They had their share of dolls--Dawn, Barbie, Holly Hobbie, Cabbage Patch, etc. and those dolls had no appeal to me whatsoever.

Somewhere along the line, my "hard edged self " found her inner child and that child fell in live with dolls all over again. Of course, non-doll-lovers think I have lost my mind. Perhaps, I was never as hard-edged and funky as I thought I was.

At the moment I am president of my UFDC club which has 27 members and not one of the members looks like she might have ever collected dolls. They come from every walk of life and their collections are as diverse and varied as they are.

Doll collecting usually ranks second after coin or stamp collecting. Collections can be worth millions of dollars and are frequently used to hide assets until they hit the auction block. Dolls reflect the past and present and are a key to studying the past much the same way as art and literature reflect the times.

When I visit the beautiful, "frou-frou blogs" on the net and see fabulous photos, they make me very happy. Frequently dolls are incorporated into artwork and sculptures at these sites. There is eye candy everywhere. There are wonderfully creative doll makers, artists, and bloggers who share their talent so generously with others. What a wonderful time to be alive and creative and sharing!

I hope that your own imagination is sparked from time to time and you find things that make your life fun in unexpected ways.

Enjoy your day and your weekend!

HAH! I love the demented kewpie! That is the exact sentiment my husband has expressed many times! You should have seen him the morning we went to Starbucks a couple of years ago and I happily placed my new Hitty doll on the table to share breakfast with us. Uh, that was the First and Last time she joined us on our outings together! Thank goodness I'm not alone in my insane addiction! What FUN- Thank-you Helen!

oh that sign is so so so funny...i am becoming that person really fast..ha ha...funny how people either love the dolls or think you have gone off the edge of the earth. Your post just affirmed i am doing the right thing...i think i will leave a note for the kids of where i stored the boxes..so when they go to sell they can get top dollars for them...ha ha..not that i plan on going anytime soon...if i live to be 80something that is only 40 more years to collect more and to gather value..right?...nice to meet you today...
and i had tears in my eyes about Molly..i lost my beagle a year and a half ago and she was 18...amazing how much a part of the family they really are! I love your stories about her..so sweet..and i giggled when i realized that the air was blowing..ha ha

hope to see you around on flickr! and thank you for your sweet comment on my blog..which reminds me i am way behind posting...need to update soon!
