Off the beaten path....

It was beautiful weekend after all. The weather was iffy but yesterday was a spectacular winter day with bright sun, mild temperatures and dry roads. Days like this are wonderful to explore the roads not taken. These photos were taken in Mystic and Fenwick.

Fenwick was the home of Katherine Hepburn until she passed away. A nine golf course is surrounded by summer mansions in this tiny borough. There is a private chapel and the views are spectacular. Ms. Hepburn's house is one of the best houses as it has views of both lighthouses and is located on the waterfront with a most spectacular view of Long Island Sound. I was looking at her house yesterday and thinking about what a wonderful life she had in it. I collect biographies of Katherine and have a large coffee table photo book with wonderful pictures of her life at Fenwick. The lighthouses are the ones she could see from her home.

That large stone building is in the Mystic area. The fish sculpture is on the Mystic River near the bridge. The rustic gate is on Lambtown Road in an obscure section of Quakertown . This is the last unpaved road in Ledyard and faces a swamp that is host to abundant wildlife. There were two turkey vultures screeching at each other when I took the photo and one of them flew into the photo in the upper right hand corner.

We ate lunch at Mystic Pizza which was featured in the movie of the same name. They have recently added flat screen TVs that run the movie in a loop. The walls are filled with posters and stills from the movie. We have been to every location in the movie. Many scenes were not filmed in Mystic but nearby. Is the pizza great there? YES! And, yes, it is always busy and filled with customers who return year after year.

I have a busy day ahead, so I must get going here. The holidays are behind and now its time to delve back into a regular schedule. Although, today I am seeing an old friend and exchanging Christmas gifts, so I have one more day of holiday fun ahead before I tackle some serious projects.

Enjoy your day!

Thank you for the beautiful pictures! I grew up in New London, CT and graduated high school in Old Saybrook in 1964. I recognized the sights immediately. I miss the beautiful winters in New England especially since I now live in Sunny Arizona!

I admired Katherine Hepburn greatly, and once was fortunate to see her in a play here in Seattle. I enjoyed it very much. These photos are beautiful Helen.
